How does L. delbrueckii contribute to intestinal health?

It ferments carbohydrates to produce lactic acid, which lowers the local pH and inhibits the colonization of pathogens. Furthermore, it produces exopolysaccharides (EPS) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that help maintain the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier.
